Will Sacramento Tax Pot?

Will Sacramento Tax Pot?

Will the City of Sacramento add a tax on pot? Should they tax pot. Those are the questions the Sacramento City Council will try to answer. The Council will debate a tax on marijuana dispensaries at tonight’s city council meeting.

The new tax proposal could be put on the November ballot and voted on by Sacramento residents. In addition to the pot tax the council’s proposal includes increasing the current taxes every business in the city. If the pot tax is enacted it will be officially called the “business operations tax” and would take effect in July 2011.

The tax would start out at 3%, go to 4% next year, and jump to 5% in the third year. The city feels they would make $850,000 in three years on the new tax.

The city voted to boycott Arizona and the backlash of that vote has created a boycott Sacramento campaign. Adding additional taxes on businesses when the city council is already creating an anti-business climate is not sitting well with some. The additional taxes will undoubtedly fuel the fire of a recall campaign that has already begun.

When asked Mayor Kevin Johnson has this to say “Yes. I support a special tax. But, I would hate to see it so steep that it alienates businesses,” said Johnson. “Three percent is quite steep as far as taxes for marijuana go. Currently, the highest is Oakland, to my knowledge.”

REGISTER TO VOTE in a few of the states with mj laws on the ballot in November. And while we’re talking, tell people to be on the watch for the “October Surprise”, some trumped-up bad “news” about marijuana that will be intended to persuade voters at the last minute. Register to VOTE and tell your friends to not fall for the “October Surprise!”

  2. I hope they tax marijuana. If they get weed legalized to tax, then they could lead the rest of the states into legalizing marijuana. California did it back in the 90s with medical marijuana and can now do it with recreational marijuana
