Shooting Suspect Arrested After Standoff in Carmichael

Earlier this afternoon shortly before 2:00 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a shooting at the Terrace at Fair Oaks Apartments in the 5800 block of Sutter Avenue. A female caller stated that her boyfriend had been shot in the head, and she was transporting him to a hospital. Deputies located the caller and the victim, a male in his late 20’s, who had sustained a gunshot wound to his head. The victim was transported to an area hospital, and was expected to survive his injuries.

Information indicated that after the shooting, the suspect retreated into a second story apartment inside the complex. Deputies established perimeter containment around the complex, and members of the Sheriff’s Department’s Special Enforcement Detail were mobilized, as well. Several apartments near the one where the suspect was believed to be were evacuated for the safety of the occupants inside.

Once the scene was contained, deputies made numerous PA announcements for anyone inside the target apartment to come outside. A male could be seen looking out the window of the apartment, but he refused to comply with orders to exit the residence. After approximately fifteen minutes, the subject finally emerged from the apartment and was taken into custody. He was positively identified as the shooting suspect. The apartment was free of any other occupants, but deputies did recover a handgun, which was believed to be the weapon used in the shooting, inside the apartment.

The motive for this shooting is still under investigation. Deputies believe that although a brief verbal altercation between Reyes and the victim preceded the shooting, that there was no pre-existing relationship between the two. The suspect was identified as Joseph Reyes, 31. Reyes was expected to be booked into custody and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. His booking photograph will be released when it is available.
