Sactown itself does not smell orange, but the magazine Sactown sure does. The second annual Best of the City issue of Sactown has a scratch-and-sniff cover. This issue talks about scenic hikes to skating rinks.
The scratch-and-sniff cover was used to highlight a mandarin orange festival. The costs to add the orange smell to the 51,000 magazines was about $2,000.
“This was a great way for us to be interactive and engage the reader,” said Rob Turner, who owns and edits the magazine. “It’s the kind of thing that brings a smile to everyone’s face. It’s nostalgic for a lot of people.” This was the first time anyone used scratch-and-sniff on a cover if a magazine.
