Sumatran tiger born at Sacramento Zoo


The Sacramento Zoo welcomed the surprise birth of a Sumatran tiger cub Thursday.

The 2-pound baby was born to Bahagia, a female and Castro, a male. It was the second litter for the pair who had three males cubs in November 2006.

A second cub born Thursday had severe head injuries and did not survive, said zoo spokeswoman Lauren Kraft.

Sacramento Zoo’s Giant Anteater Dies


Sacramento Zoo has lost one it’s newest editions, the baby Giant Anteater. The baby was found dead during regular rounds by zoo staff.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the staff here at Sacramento Zoo. The staff members who’ve worked so hard to ensure that this newest addition thrived have proven themselves to be dedicated, thoughtful and sensitive to the needs of the animals in our care,” said Harrison Edell, Zoo General Curator.

The cause of the animal’s death is still unknown. The baby’s twin had also dies, but only a few hours after birth. The Giant Anteater is a “near-threatened” species.
