Sacramento is planning for 15,000 homes north of its downtown, most of them on the site of a former railyard.  The homes, condominiums and townhouses will be built in anticipation of future housing needs. Area planners project that continued high gas prices will discourage people from living in distant suburbs, where they will face long commutes.

The state Department of Housing and Community Development is poised to award $47 million in state bond funds for the construction of roads and other needed infrastructure in the downtown railyard.
If Housing and Community Development Secretary Lynn Jacobs signs off on the award Friday, it will be the largest amount given to any of the nearly 50 projects around the state receiving money from Proposition IC, the housing bond passed by voters in 2006.
