The Sacramento Kings have fired coach Paul Westphal. He has been with the Kings for about two seasons and leaves with a record of 51-120. Assistant coach Keith Smart will take over until a replacement is found.
“The overall performance level of the team has not approached what we felt was reasonable to expect,” said the Kings president of basketball operations, Geoff Petrie, in a news release.
Westphal saidn in a new release, “Geoff Petrie and his staff have been nothing but honest and supportive throughout my time here, they are first class in every way and I wish them nothing but success. My hope is to see the fans of the Kings and the city of Sacramento rewarded with many years of great basketball.” “Finally, I want to thank my loyal staff and players for their efforts in attempting to climb out of the hole we shared,” “Nothing comes easy in the NBA and I know they will not rest in their efforts to rebuild this team.”

Despite the NBA lockout the new Sacramento area sports complex is moving forward according to Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson.
The NBA has canceled the first two weeks of games, but that is not going to stop Johnson. He issued the following statement:
“While like many others we hope that the NBA and the players are able to come to an agreement, our focus has always been that this facility is more than just a professional basketball arena but rather, similar to what has taken place in Kansas City, an entertainment and sports complex that will generate economic activity and create jobs,”

The Sacramento City Council voted 7-2 to approve spending $555,000 on the consultants for the new arena. The only decenting votes came from Sandy Sheedy and Darrell Fong. Sheedy said “a limit to what we can do in terms of funding an arena.” . . . “We are moving ahead with money that we can’t spend,”. While Darrell Fong wanted more outside involvement saying he had “serious concerns” that other local government are not spending any money on these consultants.
The money will be spent on lawyers, investment bankers, municipal financing consultants, parking experts, and other consultants. The consultants included firms like Barrett Sports Group.

The Sacramento Kings and the City of Sacramento are working towards a new arena for the Sacramento Kings. On many fronts progress has been made, however no financing has been secured.
The ICON presented their feasibility study to build a sports and entertainment complex to Mayor Kevin Johnson and the Sacramento City Council in a special meeting at City Hall. The study the ICON group concludes that building a new arena can be done. They however made no mention of how the arena would be financed. “Today is indeed a historic day for the Sacramento metropolitan region,” said Chris Lehane, co-chair of Mayor Johnson’s arena task force. “The feasibility study was conceived, really to address three questions. Is the site feasible, is the cost feasible and is it feasible to do some type of financial approach?”

Will there be new owners of the Sacramento Kings? Will the Maloofs be involved or even have a minority stake in the financially troubled team? Those are the questions some are asking after a group of investors has come forward. The group was put together by Kings veteran Chris Webber.
The Sacramento Kings were one of the best NBA from 2001 to 2003, however in recent years their performance has been lack luster at best. The poor performance has certainly hurt the Kings financially. Now there is hope the Kings will fall under new ownership.

The Kings are staying in Sacramento, at least for now. The Maloof did not request relocation today. The family had made the decision to move the team weeks ago, but they were never able to convince the other team owners.
The Maloof family said “We appreciate everything the Samuelis, Anaheim Arena Management and the City of Anaheim did for us, but we decided to give Sacramento one more opportunity.” “Kevin Johnson, Sacramento mayor, has made a lot of promises and we’re going to hold him to his word to see if they can come up with a new arena plan.”. The door remains open to move the team next year according to the Maloofs.

Last night was the Sacramento Kings last game in Sacramento. The Kings lost to the defending champion LA Lakers, which was expected, but they did take it into OT. The final score was 116-108.
The Maloofs again made money off the backs of Kings fans. No one told the sell out crowd that the Kings are moving to Anaheim . Joe and Gavin Maloof did not even bother showing up for the King’s last game. Instead they are in New York trying to ensure no one can stop their move to Anaheim. Anaheim mayor Tom Tait will also be in in New York to help ensure the move takes place. Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson will be there to try and stop an already made decision.

Moving the Sacramento Kings has been a rumor for a while now, but we have learned this evening that they will in fact be moving to Anaheim.
The new Anaheim Kings will be playing in the Honda Center for the next NBA season. The “official” announcement is scheduled to be made around mid or early May. The only item preventing the Kings from moving is an approval by a majority of the NBA’s owners. The Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers are already fighting the move, but the Maloofs will try to convince other teams in the league that the move is a good idea.

Will the Sacramento Kings move to a new city? That is the question being asked and there are no real answers. The Sacramento Kings have not done well this year and fans are not as loyal as they once were. There is no new arena and the economy stinks. All of this has created lower ticket sales, but will it be enough to force the Maloofs to move the team?
The 22 year old ARCO arena was recently rename to the Power Balance Pavilion. In 2006, voters voted down a sales tax measure that would fund a new stadium.
