This is an update to the story we brought you last week. At their January 18, 2011 meeting, the Elk Grove Unified School District’s Board of Education directed staff to adjust the boundary proposal for Robert J. Fite, Carroll, Elliott Ranch and Joseph Sims elementary schools to begin in the 2012-2013 school year.
The January 18 meeting was the first time that the Board had the opportunity to discuss public input about the boundary proposal. The district held 10 community meetings through December to gather input. The boundary conversations center on the exploration of a number of options to balance enrollment at secondary schools throughout the district.

The Elk Grove Unified School District’s Board of Education has directed staff to conduct meetings in several school communities to discuss potential boundary changes.
The discussions are part of a process that the Board of Education engages in to study the enrollments of the district’s nine high schools and their feeder schools. Today marks the first day of school for many kids in the greater Sacramento area. Some districts, like Folsom Cordova, are already in their second week of school, but for a majority of the districts today is the end of a hopefully fun filled summer and back to building of a foundation that will help them succeed into the future.
For most kids the school they are attending will be the same as last year or one that has seen many kids through the years. With the downturn of the economy and housing market we have not seen many new schools built in recent years. Many districts have even started to consolidate and close schools. That is not the case for this year’s students attending Cosumnes River Elementary School in Sloughhouse. Students at Cosumnes River Elementary School, or as most of the local residents call it CRES, are attending a brand new school today.

On Wednesday, June 16, sixth grader, Kailuh Menefee, will deliver a powerful message to her fellow students: Stop Bullying! She will deliver this message as part of an after-school assembly that she has been planning for the past few months.
Earlier this year, Kailuh was assigned the task of writing an essay about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message and how it could affect the decisions she makes in her life. As part of her essay, Kailuh wrote, “In the fifth grade I’d look out the window of my dark room and see myself in a town of vacant buildings. I was in pain. I thought people wouldn’t like me for myself. To mask the hurt I went around ridiculing people and telling them they were ugly. Now, I realize because of the bullying I’ve done I was on my own.”
