Sheldon High School teacher named Bandworld Legion of Honor Laureate


James Mazzaferro, band director at Sheldon High School, has been selected as one of two band directors in the United States to become a Bandworld Legion of Honor Laureate.

“It’s wonderful to see Jim recognized for the many years of hard work and dedication he has devoted to being an exceptional teacher and role model for students,” said Paula Duncan, principal at Sheldon. “Thanks to Jim, the music program at Sheldon has flourished into one of the top and most respected music programs in the area. He continues to raise the bar for musical excellence in his students and our school is thrilled to see him recognized nationally for his tireless efforts.”

EGUSD Virtual Academy now enrolling high school students for 2012 spring semester


Enrollment in the EGUSD Virtual Academy is now open for students in grades 9-12 for the spring 2012 semester. Enrollment closes on Tuesday, December 13, 2011. The 2012 spring semester starts on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, and ends on Monday, May 21, 2012. Click here to learn more about the high school program.

The EGUSD Virtual Academy provides a unique learning opportunity for the 21st century parent and student. The online academy allows students in kindergarten through 12th grade to experience teaching and learning from virtually anywhere a computer will take them. Student learning is directed by an adult at home, called a learning coach. Learning coaches and students are guided by an EGUSD teacher.

EGUSD schools to celebrate International Walk to School Day


On Wednesday, October 5, all EGUSD elementary schools, as well as student volunteers from several middle and high schools, will participate in International Walk to School Day with a variety of activities.

Schools will recognize Walk To School Day with a variety of events, including: assemblies; raffles for students who walk or bike to school; walking the tracks at rural schools; safety fairs; presentations from local law enforcement and fire department; class discussions about health, fitness and safety; poster contests; and “walking school buses” – groups of parents and students who “pick up” other students at “bus stops” along the way to school.

EGUSD launches attendance campaign for 2011/2012 school year


The Elk Grove Unified School District No Excuses – Go to School Attendance Campaign is already in full swing for the sixth straight year. This year’s campaign follows one of the most successful years for the campaign since its inception during the 2006-2007 school year. Attendance for the 2010/2011 school year jumped .38 percent, netting an additional $1.4 million in funding for the district.

The 2011/2012 Attendance Campaign brings new contests and new changes to existing contests. This year, middle school students and high school students in grades 9-11 have a chance to win a brand new laptop computer and printer through the Perfect Attendance Middle School and Perfect Attendance High School Laptop Giveaways. To qualify, students must have at least one month of perfect attendance. At the end of the school year, one student from each middle school and each high school will be randomly selected to attend the Grand Finale Event where one middle and one high school student will each walk away with a new laptop and printer.

Katherine L. Albiani Middle School volunteer earns CSUS Community Partnership Award


Wendi Emmett, a parent volunteer at Katherine L. Albiani Middle School, has been selected to receive the California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) College of Education’s Community Partnership Award. Emmett will receive her award during a banquet on September 23 at the CSUS Alumni Center.

Emmett has been a dedicated volunteer at Albiani for the past six years. She has worked with the Sports on Campus (SOC) Program and the Parent Teacher Advisory Committee, as well as devoting countless hours of volunteer work and donating school supplies for the students at staff at Albiani.

Sacramento River Cats Tickets to Benefit EGUSD Athletics


The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) has partnered with the Sacramento River Cats to raise funds for the EGUSD high school athletics program.  EGUSD will receive 50 percent of the ticket price for tickets purchased for two Sacramento River Cats playoff games on September 9 and 10.

Special promotions will be featured at each game.  The game on September 9 is $1 hot dog and $1 dessert night.  A fireworks show will occur after the game on September 10.  Game attendees wearing school spirit gear to either game will receive $2 in Cat Cash – which can be used to purchase food and souvenirs at the ball park.

Open Houses will be held at Cosumnes Oaks High School (8350 Lotz Parkway, Elk Grove 95757) in the Career Center on the following dates:

Thursday, June 16th 12 p.m.
Friday, July 22nd 3 p.m.

Elk Grove Unified School District Cutting Transportation for Students


The Elk Grove School district will be cutting bus transportation for some student starting next year. The cuts are due to the $40 million budget reduction from the state for the 2011-2012 school year. The district has cut $100 million from its budget in the last three years.

In addition to transportation cuts the EGUSD has sent layoff notices to hundreds of teachers.  The transportation cuts will affect services for kindergarten and 7th through 12th grade general education students.

Elk Grove High School to hold 7th Annual Car Show


On Saturday, May 7th, the Elk Grove High School (EGHS) Automotive Department will hold their 7th Annual “Support Our Auto Shop” Car Show at 7:30 a.m.

All car owners are invited to come out to compete for trophies designed and made by EGHS auto shop students. The event will feature the great cars of the past and present – such as classic muscle cars, hot rods and customs – as well as food, music, drawings and raffles for prizes.
