Legislative leaders and Gov. Schwarznegger met Friday to try to reach some accord on how to bridge the state’s ever-growing budget gap but concluded the morning meeting without a deal. One of the ideas under discussion was reportedly a tripling of the vehicle license fee (VLF) in return for more spending cuts. Gov. Schwarzenegger’s first act of governor in 2003 was to repeal a big hike in the unpopular VLF. At the time, rescinding the car tax meant a loss of about $4 billion to the state budget.

Don Perata, Fabian Nuñez — are you guys still here? Apparently so. Nuñez has been succeeded as Assembly speaker, and Perata’s replacement as Senate president pro tem has been named, but the two men who led California’s legislative Democrats for the last several years remain major players in the expenditure of political donors’ money.
