Second Suspect in Custody for Attempted Robbery

Sheriff’s Robbery detectives have arrested a second suspect in connection with the attempted robbery of an armored car guard in south Sacramento yesterday afternoon. Keith Lamont Smith, 55, was arrested at a residence in Sacramento at approximately 6:00 p.m. yesterday, and later booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. Smith (see attached photo) faces charges including attempted robbery, conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a controlled substance. He is currently being held on $100,000 bail.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. yesterday, Sheriff’s deputies responded to calls of shots fired in the parking lot of a store in the 6000 block of Florin Road. It was later discovered that an armored car guard at the location had fired his weapon at two suspects involved in an attempted robbery of him. One suspect, who shot the victim with a taser, was taken into custody directly after the incident. He is currently being treated for a gunshot wound to his leg, and is expected to be booked into custody when he is medically cleared for incarceration.

Further investigation by detectives led to the identification of Smith as a getaway driver in this incident. Smith is believed to have waited in a vehicle in the parking lot while the first suspect attempted to rob the victim of money as he exited the store. Detectives are not currently seeking any additional outstanding suspects in connection to this crime.
