Sacramento police chief Rick Braziel who is well liked and is considered an excellent police chief may be leaving Sacramento. Braziel is one of three finalists still under consideration to become the new chief of police for the city of Seattle.
Previously we reported that Braziel was down to the last 11 candidates. Braziel said he was informed late Tuesday that he was one of three candidates left. The former police chief of Seattle was Gil Kerlikowske. Kerlikowske left the department to become drug czar under President Barack Obama.
“Ultimately, Seattle Mayor McGinn will make a decision on who is the best fit for the city. I am honored to have made it this far in the selection process. My success is a reflection of the great work the men and women of the Sacramento Police Department do every day,” Braziel said. Rick Braziel who is 50 years old has been with the department for 30 years. He was named chief in December 2007.
Also still under consideration for the post are current interim Seattle Police Chief John Diaz and East Palo Alto Police Department chief Ronald Davis. Following presentations of the three finalists to the Seattle City Council’s Public Safety and Education Committee next month, McGinn will make his selection. That choice will then go before a vote by the full city council.
McGinn was expected to make his decision by mid-June.
