Although it may be in the a bit chilly tonight, don’t fire up the fireplace. It’s a no-burn day in Sacramento County — and Sunday. Because of a change in the weather pattern, the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District prohibits all burning. The ban in Sacramento County includes pressed fire logs, wood and pellets. First time violations result in a $50 fine or having to attend a compliance school. Higher fines are levied for repeat offenders.
This is just plain silly. If I want to have a fire in my …

I know, I know, too much prop 8 stuff, but here goes. The opponents of Prop 8 are planning to gather 10,000 supporters for a rally Saturday at the state Capitol. If attendance estimates prove correct, it would be one of the largest rallies at the Capitol since the Vietnam War. Comedian Margaret Cho, attorney Gloria Allred, and state Sen. Darryl Steinberg, D-Sacramento, are slated as featured speakers at the 2 p.m. rally.
Come on guys Gloria Allred, this is the best you could do? You are …

Legislative leaders and Gov. Schwarznegger met Friday to try to reach some accord on how to bridge the state’s ever-growing budget gap but concluded the morning meeting without a deal. One of the ideas under discussion was reportedly a tripling of the vehicle license fee (VLF) in return for more spending cuts. Gov. Schwarzenegger’s first act of governor in 2003 was to repeal a big hike in the unpopular VLF. At the time, rescinding the car tax meant a loss of about $4 billion to the state budget.
So the …

The blowback from last Tuesday’s passage of Prop. 8, which prohibits same-sex marriage in California, has hit the California Musical Theatre, a major nonprofit stage company in Sacramento, following the revelation via the Web that its artistic director gave $1,000 to back the state constitutional amendment.
Among those weighing in with dismay over Scott Eckern’s donation are Tony winners Jeff Whitty, who wrote the book for “Avenue Q,” and Marc Shaiman, composer and co-lyricist of “Hairspray.” Shaiman said Tuesday that he phoned Eckern on Friday to protest, then e-mailed more than …

Sacramento County supervisors today approved on a 3-2 vote a 56-foot long, red fiberglass rabbit for Sacramento International Airport’s planned new terminal building. The rabbit would soar across the terminal’s four-story atrium hall towards baggage claim below, where waits a sculpted stone suitcase with a swirling liquid vortex on its surface. The artist is Lawrence Argent, an art professor at the University of Denver.
Arts leaders and artists called it a great addition to the local art scene, a piece that will put Sacramento and its airport on the map. The …

Now here’s a headline I never thought I’d see on the editorial pages of the Sacramento Bee: “JOHNSON FOR MAYOR: TIME FOR A CHANGE ” But there it was yesterday — another blow to the fledgling campaign of incumbent (been there since the first George Bush) Mayor Heather Fargo.
Said the editorial: “It’s time for new leadership and a new navigator. That makes Kevin Johnson a better choice … In voting for Kevin Johnson, Sacramentans will be opting for change, not writing a blank check. They will be saying they are …

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to veto the state’s budget as early as today, but an override of the veto is likely. Hours after the state Legislature approved the long-delayed spending plan yesterday, the governor promised a veto and called it irresponsible for burdening taxpayers and failing to meet his demands for long-term fiscal reform. It would be the first budget veto in modern history by a California governor.
Schwarzenegger’s announcement came after a record-long stalemate that forced the state to delay billions of dollars in payments to schools, …
