Drastic budget cuts by the City of Sacramento has prevented the Parks and Recreation Department from restoring service hours to its ten community swimming pools. Several of the pools are open only for classes or lifeguard training. For half a dozen others, public swimming hours are from 2pm to 4 pm.
That means swimmers dealing with hot summer temperatures aren’t able to use the pools during the hottest part of the day around 5pm. Some residents are frustrated because the hours of operation are not posted clearly. Emma Halaapiapi and her five kids arrived at Magnan Pool in the Fruitridge neighborhood at 11am waiting for the pool to open. The sign said it is open from 1pm to 5pm, but that was before hours were adjusted to deal with the city’s budget crisis. The Park and Recreatioh website shows that the pool is closed for public use.

Will you boycott Sacramento over the city councils decision to boycott Arizona over enforcing federal law? You are not alone if you plan on boycotting Sacramento businesses. Thousands of people have committed to not do business in the city limits of Sacramento.
Over 2,240 people have signed up for a Facebook group committed to boycotting Sacramento. The Sacramento Convention Center has received hundreds of calls from businesses outside of California saying they will no longer be doing any conventions in Sacramento. Area talk shows are inundated with calls and emails from people all boycotting Sacramento. The Sacramento Metro Chamber has heard from a significant number of business that are getting calls from their customers about a boycott. Most agree the City Council’s decision to boycott Arizona will do very little to hurt Arizona, but will significantly impact the City of Sacramento.

On Wednesday, June 16, sixth grader, Kailuh Menefee, will deliver a powerful message to her fellow students: Stop Bullying! She will deliver this message as part of an after-school assembly that she has been planning for the past few months.
Earlier this year, Kailuh was assigned the task of writing an essay about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s message and how it could affect the decisions she makes in her life. As part of her essay, Kailuh wrote, “In the fifth grade I’d look out the window of my dark room and see myself in a town of vacant buildings. I was in pain. I thought people wouldn’t like me for myself. To mask the hurt I went around ridiculing people and telling them they were ugly. Now, I realize because of the bullying I’ve done I was on my own.”

Sactown itself does not smell orange, but the magazine Sactown sure does. The second annual Best of the City issue of Sactown has a scratch-and-sniff cover. This issue talks about scenic hikes to skating rinks.
The scratch-and-sniff cover was used to highlight a mandarin orange festival. The costs to add the orange smell to the 51,000 magazines was about $2,000.
“This was a great way for us to be interactive and engage the reader,” said Rob Turner, who owns and edits the magazine. “It’s the kind of thing that brings a smile to everyone’s face. It’s nostalgic for a lot of people.” This was the first time anyone used scratch-and-sniff on a cover if a magazine.

The classic lawn, which is lush, green and crisply mowed, became a basic landscaping element in the dry west early in the 20th century. Dams, pipelines and electric pumps made water easily available to homeowners during this era. Today, a growing population is straining the water supply in much of the region. Conservation is an important issue, and attention has naturally focused on the huge amount of water needed to keep lawns alive and green.
Research has shown that grasses traditionally favored for turf use (such as Kentucky bluegrass, bent grasses, fine fescues and perennial ryegrass) require more water per square foot than almost any other kind of garden plant. Also, up to half the water used by a typical single-family household is applied outdoors, primarily to lawns. It is important to note that most homeowners give the lawn more water than it really needs.
