A skateboarder faces surgery after being struck by a car in Sacramento. The accident happened near Freeport Boulevard and Harian Way Saturday night. Police said two 12- or 13-year-old boys were not paying attention when they rode their skateboards into traffic.
Police said drivers tried to avoid the boys but one of them was hit. That boy suffered severe trauma to the head and was taken to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.

A Rancho Cordova police officer was injured Friday in a motorcycle crash along Highway 99 in Sutter County, the California Highway Patrol said.
The wreck occurred shortly after 11 a.m. along Highway 99 at the intersection of Highway 113.
The 39-year-old officer, who was not immediately named, was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Police said the officer’s injuries were not life-threatening and that he is expected to make a full recovery.

One house of the state Legislature has passed part of an $18 billion plan to tackle California’s budget deficit, bypassing the need for a two-thirds majority vote to approve a tax increase. Senate Democrats were voting on a complicated mix of revenue cuts and tax increases to address part of California’s $42 billion budget shortfall. They were hoping for a simple majority vote, passing it without Republican support.

Sheriff’s deputies say three young women found dead in a car near the Squaw Valley ski resort were apparently the victims of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. The car’s engine was running Tuesday when a security guard found the bodies of 22-year-old Lacey Louann Sutton of Marysville, 21-year-old Sara Alice McCullah of Marysville and a 17-year-old girl from Loma Rica. The name of the 17-year-old was not released.

Detectives visited the home of a man whose parents were found stabbed to death inside their South Natomas home, according to neighbors. Matt Riley, 30, called police Tuesday afternoon and said he found his parents brutally stabbed inside their home on Paddle Wheel Court. The slain couple was identified Wednesday as Linda Marie Riley, a benefits manager at CalSTRS, and Steven Dale Riley, who worked in information technology for CalPERS.

A postman revived a lifeless toddler while he was walking his route in Sacramento. Robert Sweeney said he was finishing his route through a Natomas neighborhood Thursday when he heard the panicked cries of Kelly Jimenez’s mother, who came running out of their house. “She said, ‘My baby, my baby,’” Sweeney said. “My first thing was, I grabbed the baby from her arms, and I just brought her over here and laid her in the grass.”

An anti-theft program captured the image of a man who may have stolen a laptop computer from Hiram Johnson High School, the Sacramento Police Department said. Sgt. Norm Leong said the theft took place on Oct. 14 sometime between 4 p.m. and the next morning after someone got into a school office. The school’s anti-theft program allows computers to be tracked and photos to be taken of people who may be using them, Leong said.

A 33 year old woman has been arrested after detectives said she intentionally drowned her baby boy in a toilet, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said. KCRA reported that Kristen Gibson was under investigation after deputies went to a home in Rancho Cordova to investigate an infant’s death in July.
A female roommate told an emergency medical worker that she had found the woman and infant in the bathroom. The responding deputies’ initial investigation revealed that the woman had given birth while on the toilet, the department said. …

Police in Stockton, Calif., allege a man broke into an area home and then hid inside a large Rubbermaid-type container when officers arrived on scene. Sheriff’s deputies alleged Tuesday they found Joseph Womack, 22, hiding inside a container measuring 2 feet-by-3 feet after responding to a call about a potential burglary in progress at a Stockton home, KCRA-TV, Sacramento said. The container and its alleged cargo were found inside a bedroom closet, the deputies said.
