Sacramento State Budget Cuts

Sacramento State University students, faculty and staff rallied Wednesday to protest $66.3 million in proposed cuts to the CSU system budget. California State University Chancellor Charles B. Reed said Monday that the CSU system plans to eliminate 10,000 admission spots for the 2009-10 school year to make way for the cuts. Dozens of people staged a similar protest Wednesday outside the CSU headquarters in Los Angeles.

Retailers draw up Black Friday battle plans

Retailers are hoping to see plenty of shoppers like the Kusters with their marching orders on the big day. They’ll open their doors well before dawn to draw shoppers, create buzz and try to revive a slumbering retail market. “The shoppers come earlier and earlier, so it behooves the merchants to open when shoppers are out strategizing,” said Michele Rothstein, a spokeswoman for Folsom Premium Outlets. It’s not good out there people. Sacramento county median home price dropped to $195,000. It have not been bellow $200,000 since April 2002. The reverse breakthrough – back to $195,000 – came exactly one year after the county’s median sales price for new and existing homes combined fell below $300,000, according to MDA DataQuick statistics released Thursday. The median is that point at which half cost more and half cost less.

The blowback from last Tuesday’s passage of Prop. 8, which prohibits same-sex marriage in California, has hit the California Musical Theatre, a major nonprofit stage company in Sacramento, following the revelation via the Web that its artistic director gave $1,000 to back the state constitutional amendment.

Sacramento County supervisors today approved on a 3-2 vote a 56-foot long, red fiberglass rabbit for Sacramento International Airport’s planned new terminal building. The rabbit would soar across the terminal’s four-story atrium hall towards baggage claim below, where waits a sculpted stone suitcase with a swirling liquid vortex on its surface. The artist is Lawrence Argent, an art professor at the University of Denver.
Arts leaders and artists called it a great addition to the local art scene, a piece that will put Sacramento and its airport on the map.  The …

Former NBA star Kevin Johnson has opened up an eight-point lead over incumbent Heather Fargo in the race for Sacramento mayor, but a large block of undecided voters still could swing the Nov. 4 election.
Johnson leads Fargo 48 percent to 40 percent among likely voters, according to a new poll commissioned by The Bee. Of 500 likely voters surveyed, 12 percent said they hadn’t made up their minds.

Sacramento County remembered Deputy Sheriff Jeffrey Mitchell at a dedication ceremony Monday morning. Mitchell was murdered while on duty nearly two years ago. His killer has never been caught.  Deputy Sheriff Mitchell was a nine-year veteran of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department. He was shot to death during a traffic stop along Meiss Road, just east of Dillard, October 27, 2006.
Monday morning, Sacramento County Sheriff John McGuiness, as well as other community leaders, dedicated a one-mile stretch of Meiss Road in Mitchell’s honor. The memorial roadway extends about a half-mile in …

Sacramento mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson has been booked to appear on the “Colbert Report,” his campaign said Monday.  Johnson, a former NBA player, is facing off in the Nov. 4 general election against two-term incument Heather Fargo, who is seeking her third term. 
Steve Maviglio, a representative of Johnson’s campaign, said the candidate is booked for the Comedy Central show on Nov. 13.  Why after the election?
